This file type stands for Joint Photographic Expert Group, and is the most commonly used system of image compression. Using a sliding scale between file size and picture quality, it enables digital cameras and computers to squash a large picture file into a small amount of memory. Be careful when compressing files, though, because too much compression will reduce the quality of your image.
