External flash

Some cameras have a connection using a hotshoe, that enables use of a flashgun other that the built in camera one. This enables a lot more creative freedom and control over lighting, because the flash can be positioned further away from the camera. It also helps to prevent red-eye when taking portraits. This feature is only usually available on more expensive or professional digicams.
