Backlighting

Backlighting occurs when your subject is brightly light from behind, such as someone standing in front of a sunlit window. Unless you adjust the exposure to compensate for this, your subject will appear as a dark silhouette against the bright background. You may be able to sometimes compensate for this effect with editing software.
